If you are finally launching your great idea, or you are a growing business needing a technology investment to get you to the next level, you’re beginning to realize that building your development team from the ground up is going to require a major investment. Ugh, right?! Don’t fret! There are some simple steps you can follow to ensure you hire the right team for your project.
Hiring technologists requires a special skill set:
- Technologist skills are highly specialized. Who do you hire & in what order?
- How do you on-board them in a way that most efficiently shepherds your budget?
- How will they track their work, collaborate, and integrate their disparate work products?
- What is the software development life cycle going to look like?
Building an internal technology team requires a huge budget, a lot of time, and careful planning. But what if you could skip all the budget-eating spin-up costs and get straight to the needed work?
It really only takes a little bit of research and these 3 simple tasks to have a technology team work on your projects in short order!
#1 Clearly define what you need from each type of user’s perspective.
- If it’s a website, what do you want it to do?
- If it’s a customer management tool, what do the primary users need? What do managers and executives need?
- If it’s an app, how does it create value for the user?
- Write a story from each user’s perspective on how they would interact with the system.
#2 Set aside a budget.
- Whether you are just starting or you’ve been in business for 30 years, you have one thing in common.
- Technology is an investment in a new business – a new way of doing things.
- A competent technology partner will be able to give you a “cowboy” estimate (experience-driven shot from the hip) for your project, but you need to know what you are able to invest before you even talk to someone.
#3 Research technology providers and ask for references.
- Like many things, you get what you pay for with technologists. Do some research! Ask for references and follow them up.
- It could be the difference between a project that is on budget, and one that has you spending half your budget just to realize you have the wrong team in place.
Communication is everything! Find someone who is easy to get in touch with, and has a good, transparent communication approach. Someone who understands what you are trying to achieve, and why.
At the end of the day, you want to be confident your technology team can bring your project to life as efficiently as possible. You need a team of multi-disciplined technologists to ensure you avoid common pitfalls. A team that will guide you with their experience and expertise.
